This cd is so massive it is almost scary. Imagine a thunderous herd of 1000 African elephants charging and you might get an idea of how huge the sound on this cd really is! Not much more can be said about the utter funk present within an innocent enough cd. This should be in every music collection, especially for funk freakes and rhythm junkies.

A landmark bit of jazz funk from one of the greatest backup groups of the 70s!
Herbie Hancock first brought The Headhunters to light using their sound to give his work the right dose of funk it needed to reach new audiences during the decade.
This album's the first to feature the group on their own, without Herbie -- and if we don't mind saying so, they sound even better without him! The whole thing's a wonderful mix of jazz funk grooves and very unusual rhythms.

OK the art cover is horrible, but still love this album since my first hearing in 1994...

it's not well known but, deserves to be discover

Hard to believe that two former members of Thompson Twins made this album. It is funky in most places, spiritual and emotional in some others. The music is just phenomenal here, loads of rhythms, funk beds and bridges all throughout. I am very surprised that this album was overlooked in 1994.

ELECTRONIC SYSTEM - DISCO MACHINE (1977)

A real electronic collectors item !!
Dan Lacksman was a member of the highly influential Telex band from back in the late 70's, who delivered such classics as 'Moscow Disko' a Carl Craig fave, here his very rare solo album of Moog style disco cuts gets a timely re-issue on Belgiums Archive series.
7 tracks of Giorgio Moroder basslines, lush Manuel Gottsching style strings and a hint of the old Telex funk are all on here, especially the lead cut 'Flight to Tokyo' with its uplifting 4/4 vibe and vintage emotive strings that deliver a fine taste of the LP. Also the ambient start of 'Sailing to an Unknown Planet' evokes the classic Moog period, with a deeper edge, and is a fine example of the tracks to be found. Check!!

KLAUS SCHULZE - BODY LOVE (1977)

Originally released in 1977, Body Love is Schulze´s first soundtrack. The famous pornography director, Lasse Braun, asked him to compose an original soundtrack to his movie by the same name.
Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres.

JEAN MICHEL JARRE - EQUINOX (1978)

at this time I was considering him as a pionneer in electronic music, but after having discover Klaus Schulze and other, i can say this man just copied this other...
anyway oxygene and equinox stays as my favourite electronic music, in my point of view the rest of his discography is crappy...

THE ORB

first of all i'm totally fan of THE ORB...
they really put a new energy in electronic music of this days, i think they inspire all the movement.
I wished i could see them live...
they made quite many album I've selected two :

U.F.ORB (1992)

An ambient-techno classic, UFOrb captures Alex Patterson and his sonic henchman at their early peak.
While the Orb had already created a dance-floor and chill-out-room sensation in 1991 with Little Fluffy Clouds, this follow-up disc displays Patterson's talent for fusing ambient music with dub science and a club culture mindset.
Incorporating psychedelicized samples over the era's reigning techno beats and deep reggae bass lines, heady compositions such as "Towers of Dub" and "Close Encounters" are excessive in length but consistently entertaining. The album's highlight is an 18-minute version of "Blue Room" (there's a 40-minute version out there, too), which features the sensual bass playing of Jah Wobble and the oscillating guitar of coproducer Steve Hillage.
A most serious contribution to the legacy of the modern DJ.

ASSASSIN (1992)

Assassin is one of the singles that made The Orb a legend, along with Little Fluffy Clouds, Blue Room, and Huge Evergrowing Brain...

It is a perfect example of down-tempo listening techno the Orb pioneered in the early 1990s. The best version is the Oasis of Rhythms mix found on disc 1 (green and blue box), which also features the excellent and very rare Bandulu remix of U.F.Orb.

The Oasis of Rhythms mix was included as a give away with the original release of UF Orb and then was unfortunately deleted.

Assassin is an excellent and very rare find.

Ambient Dub at its Finest

This is one of the first and best of the "ambient dub" sub-genre of electronic music -- a beautiful, bass-heavy, laid-back set of electronic soundscapes that sound great when you're chilling at home or too stoned to move.

Ambient dub is an offshoot of electronic music that never really dominated the charts, but it's a tasty, organic-sounding, and highly agreeable approach to digital music nonetheless. Higher Intelligence Agency piles colourful bloops and bleeps on top of mesmerizing basslines and relaxed beats to excellent effect.

A superb compilation featuring the coolest tracks from a selection of Roy Budd action/thriller soundtracks 1971-1977.

Put together with an emphasis on Budd's musical relevance to todays dance/jazz/electronic/chilled beats scenes it really is a fine collection of tracks.
If we'd put together a comp of Budds jazzy work then it would be like this one.
--> Pretty damn essential.

HENRI MANCINI - TWO FOR THE ROAD (1967)

This stands as Mancini's greatest achievement in his end-career stage. The theme song itself haunts you.

Justly, it has become a jazz standard, played to great effect by many, many talented jazz musicians.

And yet, as memorable as it is, the tune carries a sad sort of feeling in its intensely romantic frame.

KANDISHA, Aisha jarring effect - SHABEESATION (1993)

Throughout the album's nine tracks, electric guitars and synthesizers mix with traditional Moroccan instruments including the kmenja, a violin instrument played vertically, the guimbri, a West African bass-stringed instrument, and aouuda, a small wooden flute.

The band's already complex sound was further transformed at Bill Laswell's Brooklyn studio in 1993. As co-producer, he invited Umar Bin Hassan of the Last Poets to lend his booming vocals to "Fin Roh," while Laswell himself picked up his fabled bass for several tracks. P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell and rest of the groove-heavy Greenpoint Posse round out the funk. The already hypnotic fusion of Moroccan dance-pop and modern sampling technology were taken to a higher plane under Laswell's direction, and the resulting trancelike melange is positively rapturous.

During the group's recent sold-out tour of the UK, clubgoers responded with religous ardor to what may best be called "electro-trance-dance-techno-dub." "With this record and the live shows," explains Jabbar El Shaheed, "we want people to let themselves be free to forget everything in their lives and trance to the music."

The sound is "ambient," but also rhythmic, and it's musically complex enough to offer fresh sources of enjoyment even after repeated listenings.

The musical styles are varied enough to avoid becoming monotonous. "Pearl," with its female narrative voiceover during the first three minutes, reminded me of "Little Fluffy Clouds," The Orb's best-known track.
"Triangle," perhaps my favorite track, is a ten-minute excursion into a trance-like vibe. Some other tracks have a heavy bass line contributing to a "dub-like" sound, similar to that characterizing another Waveform release, "Earthjuice."

If you enjoy soul moving music...this CD is for you! A must have for your soothing spiritual library...

There is two CD for this album, here is the second cool trance oriented.
for me a masterpiece in its style... the tracks represent the best for the time.
with this perfect mix, they make you travel into sounds, the beat's taking you to a real journey. I'd love have listened to this mix for real whith a big soundsystem in a forest...

if there's some request i'll put the first CD which more ambient oriented which is a beautifull album.

Grace Jones was without doubt one of the most memorable characters of the 80's. Her outrageous image, her legendary temper and of course the stunning trilogy of music she created at Island Records under the supervision of Island founder Chris Blackwell.
I had my first electronic sensation with this ambient track : The Crossing (ooh the action...) and Don't cry - it's only the rhythm, many little sounds everywhere that made me fly for a while....

there is 4 albums in this serie, second is my favourite.
You got artist such : Higher Intelligence Agency or Banco de Gaia....
it's one of the first album in this style a this time, that was a revolution. this album is becoming a rarity...

i love electronic music and in 1992-1993 and at this time the mainstream was house, progressive but it was quite boring to listen to at home... boum boum boum all day was tiring !!!
so i start researching about electro mixed with world music, and that was quite hard to find things... and internet was not the tool it is today to find things !

After hearing track 14 on serenity dub 1.1 i fell in love with divine soma experience...
but there wasn't information about this band!
once i've been at the "fnac" (famous record shop in france) and per chance i found that album WELCOME TO THE LAND OF DRAGON... too happy, i went straight back home to hear it...

it's not a record nor music, but it's a real psychedelic listening experience...
"Progressive, experimental and psychoactive music simulating and achieving altered states of consciousness" -> you won't be the same after hearing that. it's a beautifull work.

for those interested in this kind of music,
this album is a real gift, a really hard to find one, even the cover art is hard to find !!!

the only information i got about divine soma experience is that site.

POSSESSION+AFRICAN DUB (1996)

in the style ethno techno or ethno dub, here is a beautifull gem...

Possession is essentially a four man operation. It is produced and arranged by Bill Laswell. The performers are Fousseny Kouyate of Mali, Foday Musa Suso of Gambia, and Aiyb Dieng of Senegal. This is African Dub off one world, no doubt about it.

This album is a textural masterpiece. Possession constructs an unusual collage of sounds over the course of four tracks which last an amazing 45 minutes. Each instrumental slowly builds and develops into a solid musical mass; however, the themes from each track never fully congeal. To some degree while listening to this album, the listener must remove him/herself from western ideals of music theory.

The thick layering of numerous sounds is reminiscent of Deep Forest and instrumental-soundtrack Peter Gabriel. Fans of these artists as well as New Age would probably find this recording very enjoyable. Stranger still, I believe consumers who crave bass for their enormous stereos would also enjoy this album. While the music isn't particularly dancable, ambient Techno and Dub fans would probably find something endearing within the music.

Short-lived but legendary, Cymande is oft-compiled on funk assemblages, but this CD of their first two LPs is altogether necessary, even if the music moves away from tight beats into Rasta-folk toward the end.
Cymande's reputation has grown considerably over the last twenty years. Featuring a multi-national crew with a strong Caribbean influence, the band produced a few hits in the early seventies, then disappeared. But the epochal "Brothers On the Side," and the ingeniously structured "Fug" contain a subtlety and tension lacking in all but the best bands of the era. As usual, the Collectables label's sound quality is passable, but nothing to brag about.

TOMMY STEWART

This is the first full-length LP and CD re-issue for Tommy Stewarts self-titled tough-to- find album. It’s a legend amongst collectors and DJs for the party anthem "Bump And Hustle Music." That tune appears on many play lists because it is on so many bootlegs and compilations. Featuring a killer vocal hook by Hot Buttered Soul (Isaac Hayes backing singers) it’s a little known fact that this track almost did not appear on the original record, it was only an afterthought put to tape last minute when the band thought they were a track short.

Recording began in Atlanta, Georgia at Sound Pit Recording Studios, and was finished in Memphis, Tennessee in 1976. This was the latter end of the rare groove era, which is reflected in the combination of funk with early disco style production. In fact, Stewart is often labeled as the innovator of disco-funk because of this album and his production on releases like Southside Connection and Sil Austin. In addition to “Bump and Hustle Music” tracks like “Riding High” and “The Fulton County Line” qualify the album as a classic and one that sits pretty next to the likes of releases by The Headhunters, Roy Ayers, and the Mighty Ryeders.

Champion Sound-A Selection Of Vintage And Today's Reggae

Bringing together 30 years of both traditional and modern reggae, Champion Sound is not a compilation full of chart reggae that is instantly recognisable. No, there is no sign of Aswaad, nor does the legendary Bob Marley get a look in - but that is not necessarily a bad thing as the feel of this compilation is of raw, rare tracks which show the true roots of reggae. Put together by two DJ's from the Parisian soul and reggae scenes, this album shows that there is much more to the Jamaican born sound than Pato Banton and UB40. Full of a mixture of old school 70's reggae such as the 1973 KC White "No,No,No" which has since been covered, and more modern almost hip-hop sounds such as "Acid" by Royal Jam featuring Mighty Jarrett the sounds are varied. The Jamaican roots here are evident; each song transports the listener to a tropical island full of soft sand and baking sunlight with each beat and swing of the musical journey. This is one of the charms of the album, that although it is not full of greatest hits and chart tunes, it still evokes feelings and emotions both through the laid back rhythm and poignant words. Perhaps this album is really only for die-hard reggae fans, who will recognise the artists and the songs they perform, maybe there is more to each soulful track than the most naïve of music fans can even begin to understand. But this rare, vintage collection can surely be enjoyed by some, its just a shame that the average persons understanding of reggae does not extend this far.

Fela Kuti is known as the architect of Afro-beat, but Nigerian drummer Tony Oladipo Allen was the genre's prime mover. Allen melded highlife with traditional drum patterns and African-American R&B, funk, and jazz. He played with Fela from 1964 to 1979. This double CD, originally released as two LPs in the late '70s, makes it possible for a new generation to experience the Afro-tantric, sub-Saharan grooves Allen and Africa 70 laid down on the turntable and the dance floor. Allen locks down the dub-influenced rhythms while below-the-equator bass lines, kinetic guitar licks, and funky horns turbocharge the long tracks (such as on the title cut, the uplifting "African Message," and "Road Safety"). As political as it is pulsating, this dancing document by Tony Allen shows that the music he and Fela created was the real rave music.

TONY ALLEN - JEALOUSY / PROGRESS

Recorded in 1975 and 1977, Jealousy and Progress were the first two records Tony Allen released under his own name. He served as composer and arranger, with Fela producing and sharing arrangement credits. Although Fela's presence (on sax and occasional vocals) lends some potency to the music, in general it is not very emotionally charged. "Jealousy" is a light jam with exciting, pulsating bass drum kicks; it is followed by the more earnest "Hustler," whose riff closely resembles Fela's "Don't Worry About My Mouth O (African Message)." "Progress" opens the second album with an intense groove and an emphatic cry for progress, which is balanced by the dark yet perky "Afro Disco Beat." Probably, most listeners will eventually view this music as little more than an interesting supplement to Fela's catalog, but it certainly stands on its own merits.

Bad Girls, however, overcame great resistance to earn both critical and popular success. Originally released as a two-record set, Bad Girls is a concept album about--what else?--S-E-X. The album saw the dynamic duo incorporating rock influences into their disco motifs ("Hot Stuff," the title track), and, in turn, influencing dance music for years to come. The ballads, meanwhile demonstrated that Summer really could sing. Summer's first step toward artistic respectability.

Like Donna Summer's previous American releases, Love to Love You Baby and A Love Trilogy, Four Seasons of Love is an extended exercise in ecstasy, here the whole album is one continuous song cycle. Four Seasons traces the blossoming and eventual withering of a love affair from the exhilarating "Spring Affair" through the steamy, passionate "Summer Fever" and ominous "Autumn Changes" to a crisp, lovely end in "Winter Melody," which blends back into a reprise of "Spring" and the promise of a new affair. The music is one unbroken landscape, interrupted only by the changing of sides.

Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, who produce Summer's records in Germany, again mesh the orgasmic ebb and flow of lovemaking with the euphoric energy of disco dancing, creating the perfect pulsing back drop to Summer's breathy, seething vocals. The songs build and break, surging on clean sweeps of violins, but because they ease off before reaching a climax, Summer and the orchestra are able to keep it up indefinitely without dissipating the record's vibrant energy. For some, the format must seem confining, but on the dance floor or in the bedroom—Summer's main spheres of influence—this kind of creative foreplay is so rich in nuance and texture that other considerations are swept aside.

Harvey Mason is a drummer who plays music. He nevers plays the same way twice. This album is truly a great piece of work. The famed line-up of musicians is incomparable. "What's Going On" with George Benson is incredible [wish I had been in the studio that day] and "Set It Free" is off the hook.
